# Buena Mono

> A free, open-source variable monospaced typeface — writer-first, tuned for reading extended prose in markdown and code editors while keeping code unambiguous. SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Overview

Buena Mono is designed for the place where writing and code meet: markdown editors, code editors and terminals. Two variable axes — weight 100–800 and slant 0 to −10 degrees — cover everything from a thin caption to an ExtraBold heading and from upright to a true 10° italic, drawn rather than sheared.

- 159 coding ligatures
- 51 OpenType features, including small caps and stylistic sets ss01–ss13
- 971 supported languages
- 2 axes, 8 masters, 16 named instances
- 618-unit fixed cell, 524-unit x-height, 699 cap height, 729 ascender, −218 descender

## Why it exists

There were two screens once: one for prose and one for code. Anyone keeping a journal in a repository knows the border is gone — the open file is markdown with a model suggesting completions in the margin, and the commit message underneath reads like a sentence. Set that markdown in a terminal face and the prose feels clenched; set the code in a book face and the columns fall apart. Buena Mono is an argument that one face can hold both: proportions tuned for reading, every glyph still answering to a single cell.

## Installing

- npm, recommended for build pipelines: `npm i buena-mono`
- Download otf, ttf, woff2 and variable files: [github.com/buenagames/buena-mono/releases](https://github.com/buenagames/buena-mono/releases)
- macOS: open `BuenaMono-VF.ttf` and click Install Font, or drop it into Font Book
- Windows: right-click `BuenaMono-VF.ttf` and choose Install
- Linux: copy to `~/.local/share/fonts/` and run `fc-cache -f`
